paul hackt The Hackathon at Zentrum Paul Klee

Are you a developer, designer, art expert or art mediator? Then paul hackt is the right place for you. Dive into the digitally interactive, hybrid museum world with us. Prove to us that an exhibition no longer means a static work on a wall. The best projects will be awarded cash prizes worth CHF 10,000.

The Zentrum Paul Klee is the museum for and about Paul Klee: around 4,000 works of art, hand puppets, correspondence, photographs, painting utensils, herbarium sheets, naturalia, school books, notebooks, sheet music and Klee’s entire library are kept here and made accessible to the public in the museum. The hackathon, supported by BEKB and GARAIO, aims to provide innovative digital solutions to immerse yourself in the life and work of Paul Klee.

Three challenges focus on experiences for visitors and users inside and outside the museum.

The Three Challenges

Cosmos Klee: the hybrid permanent exhibition that transforms itself

  • What could a hybrid, regularly changing permanent exhibition look like that is able to remain exciting for three years? What approaches could this involve?
  • How could digital interventions in the exhibition contribute to a deeper involvement in Paul Klee’s life and work?
  • What would digital bridges between the exhibition and the city of Bern and vice versa look like? How could the lobby of the BEKB bank on Bundesplatz be used as one such digital bridge?

Paths to Klee: rediscovering the existing city tour

.

  • How could a guided tour of the city of Bern become exciting, playful, and interactive?
  • How could the vestiges of Paul Klee be made to come to life physically and digitally in Bern?
  • How can relevant places, people, stories, works, and archival materials be linked together?

Web platform: Making the archive and collection an interactive experience for lay people and researchers

  • What would an interactive und participatory web platform look like?
  • How could the interconnections between works, people, correspondence, photographs, items relating to music, painting utensils, and more be created? How would forms of visualization expand or supplement current opportunities for analysis? How would they be able to create narratives or experiences?
  • Searching, finding, discovering, and contributing: how could the user experience be made exciting and stimulating?

FAQs

Where will the Hackathon take place?

The Hackathon will take place on the premises of the Zentrum Paul Klee (Monument im Fruchtland 3, 3006 Bern).

Why should I participate?

It’s an opportunity to meet like-minded people, to participate in the development of prototypes for one of Switzerland’s most renowned museums, and to do so in a unique atmosphere at the Zentrum Paul Klee. You develop what “future museum” looks like!

How do I register individually/as a team?

You can no longer register for the event.

Does the participation cost anything?

Participation is free of charge, we provide you with food and infrastructure, including the most powerful bandwidth in the city.

And how do I get there?

By public transport:
From Bern main station, take bus no. 12 (direction Zentrum Paul Klee) to the terminus.
By car:
We recommend travelling by public transport – if you are dependent on a car, take the A6 freeway, exit Bern-Ostring, GPS: Schosshaldenstrasse 92c.
There are 150 parking spaces available. Parking prices: CHF 2 per hour / CHF 7 day ticket

What do I need to bring with me?

Your notebook with power supply. Your preferred development and design tools should be installed on it so that you can get started quickly.

And if you are staying overnight: sleeping bag, mat, toiletries (showers are available) and a change of clothes.

What kind of accommodation is there?

We will organize a place to stay overnight. You don’t need to bring a sleeping bag and a mat with you.

What if I get hungry?

We take care of your meals throughout and provide you with a wide range of food and drinks.

What does the schedule look like?

You can find the rough schedule above. We will send you all details about the schedule, from check-in and opening on Friday to the pitch presentations and the award ceremony on Saturday, after you have registered.

I don't know which challenge I want to work on yet.

All challenges and the available material will be presented in a short pitch on Friday. During the team building, you will have the opportunity to exchange ideas and clarify any questions. You will therefore have enough time to decide on a challenge.

How do I find my team?

You don’t have a team yet? No problem! We run an on-site team building on Friday.

How are the results evaluated?

What you work on during these two days will be judged by the jury on Saturday. We will look at both technical and content-related aspects. With the pitch, you can convince the jury of your solution. We will explain exactly what these criteria look like on Friday.

How does the pitching work?

We look at this together, so you know what to look for.

Who is on the jury?

You will find out directly on Friday. The jury’s assessment is final and conclusive.

What is the situation regarding copyrights?

In principle, the copyrights of the intellectual property created in the paul hackt Hackathon lie with the participants. By participating in the Hackathon, the participants give their consent that we as an institution can also use and further develop the solutions. If the prototypes or data are further used, we appreciate it if they are accessible via open source, and if we are informed about the further usage.

Our project – supported by BEKB and GARAIO

The Zentrum Paul Klee, founded on the initiative of Prof. Maurice E. Müller and the descendants of the artist Paul Klee, opened in 2005. Unique in the world, more than 4000 works by Paul Klee are kept and cared for here. As a scientific centre of excellence, the Zentrum Paul Klee is dedicated to researching the life and work of Paul Klee. A selection of this extraordinary collection is presented in changing exhibitions.

Based on the multifaceted personality of the artist, the Zentrum Paul Klee, as a multi-disciplinary centre, also cultivates the harmony of various forms of artistic expression. The Zentrum Paul Klee strives to make the art collection and the archive with the written and photographic legacy of Paul Klee and his bequeathed studio utensils visible and usable in an intuitive and innovative way.

On the basis of this, the Zentrum Paul Klee and BEKB are teaming up to organise a two-day hackathon to develop exciting ideas for the digital and hybrid mediation of the exhibition, the collection and the Klee archive. GARAIO supports the hackathon as an innovation partner and thus promotes the experience of Klee’s art in the digital space.
